About Doug
My mother instilled in me a lifelong love of art, as well as the confidence to “fail” when trying to make it (thanks, Mom). And one high school teacher in particular encouraged my attempts at making art a fun, ever-challenging, intrinsically worthwhile endeavor (thanks Mr. Steinbeck). I owe these two people, as well as other teachers in my academic life, my gratitude for their encouragement and belief that my artistic pursuits were worthy of my time and effort. I have also attended seminars and community art programs over the years. This summarizes all my formal art training.
I truly love the process of conceiving and formulating a concept and seeing it come to life as a two-dimensional image. When there are times in this process that I produce something pleasing to others, I consider it a beneficial outcome, but it is not the main goal of my artistic efforts. Occasional frustrations aside, I genuinely enjoy artistic process.
My current interest is using watercolors to show contrasts, light and shadow, depth and reflection. I especially find visual inspiration in the fluidity and ever-varying gradients of water. Recently moving to Newburyport, with its thriving and exciting art community, has been a fascinating development. It’s thrilling to routinely participate in art-making with other like-minded people. Many thanks to my wife for realizing it is where we’re meant to be and getting us here.
